Welcome to the Queen of the Caribees - Nevis!!
Tranquil and undisturbed, Nevis is a truly unspoiled island that proudly carries the name, "The Queen of the Caribees." With its lovely old buildings and plantation houses, and charming Nevis hotels, it hints at the grace and finery of past ages in the West Indies. A hidden treasure in the Caribbean, Nevis was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1493. The lush green trees and hills give it a captivating view that one wants to cherish forever. Nevis has a beauty that is untamed and unspoilt.
Do not just listen or read the stories that have been told about Nevis. Experience them for yourself.
[read more]The 36 square mile island of Nevis lies near the top of the Lesser Antilles archipelago, about 200 miles South of Puerto Rico, just west of Antigua. Although this island paradise is only approximately 7 miles long and 5 miles wide, there is a lot to see and do, and at its centre stands the 3232 foot mountain called Nevis Peak, which on clear, sunny days is surrounded by bands of clouds. Wander Nevis and see the architecture of eras gone by: churches, windmills, and refurbished great houses.
From the top of Nevis Peak to the depths of the clear waters offshore, there is a world of flora and fauna to be explored. Look for the green vervet monkeys chattering and scampering in the hills, whales and dolphins cruising by in the sea and giant sea turtles gliding gracefully through the water. There are several experienced tour guides who can take you on a tour in Nevis. While some places are accessible on your own, it is recommended that you go with a tour guide into the mountain when visiting Nevis Peak or climbing other trails. Not only will this insure your safety, but it will make the trip more meaningful, as you learn about the flora, fauna and history from the experts.
Nevis has a population of 10,000 residents (Nevisians) that are ready to meet and greet you, and a number of great places to stay. Whatever your choice of accommodation, you will find that amongst the hotels in Nevis there'll be something to suit your tastes and price range. If you haven't yet decided where in Nevis you want to stay, have a look at our Nevis map to help you make a choice. There are so many ways to describe this island paradise. Come and witness this charm and tranquil island and see what you have been missing!
Nevis is paradise for nature lovers. Just listen to the monkeys chattering in the trees, the doves cooing in the distance. There is excellent snorkelling just offshore, as well as scuba diving around wrecks and natural reefs. For those more interested in man-made exploration, try your hand at archaeology, or take a Nevis tour to explore the ruins of old sugar plantations, a lime kiln or various Amerindian sites. These are the rainforests, reefs, and ruins of Nevis, a fascinating destination for people who enjoy the natural side of the tropics. Hiking in the rain forest is a must for everyone, whether it be the short hike through the nature trail at Golden Rock Plantation Inn or a day-long climb to the top of Nevis Peak.
Walk on the beach and learn about the nesting of sea turtles with a biologist as your guide, or go snorkelling with a marine biologist to learn about life under the sea. There are even night beach walks available, to study the stars, seemingly light years away from the glare of the cities. The island is covered with the ruins of the sugar plantation era, which declined in the late 1800s after slavery was abolished and the sugar beet created competition for sugar cane. Over the years, volunteer groups and researchers have come to the island to explore the history of the old buildings and record them for future generations. Several archaeology projects led by university researchers from England and the United States continue each year.
Getting to Nevis is relatively straight-forward. You can travel by air to Nevis from basically anywhere in the world, with the main gateways or stopovers including St. Marten, Puerto Rico, Antigua or St. Kitts. Whilst on your Nevis holiday, be sure to visit some other wonderful Caribbean destinations such as Montserrat, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Dominica, and St. Lucia.
